Back to school, but make it slow.
Well, well, well. It’s September.
The spiritual new year for millennial stationery lovers everywhere.
New pens, new planners, new... pressure?
A time when the internet suddenly remembers Q4 exists and tells you to "ramp up," “go hard,” and “finish strong.”
That's really cute and all. But I’d like to offer an alternative.
What if, instead, September was our cue to pause?
To take stock. To let go. To reflect on the magic of the year so far.
Because here’s what nature is preparing to do right now:
Shedding. Slowing. Preparing to rest.
She’s not yelling “LAST PUSH” and chugging espresso. Soon, she'll be dropping her leaves and getting ready to nap until April.
So maybe, just maybe, we can take the hint?
Back-to-school shouldn't mean back to burnout.
I don’t know about you, but I've always felt this low-level pressure in September to reinvent myself.
To get “back on it.” Back to structure. Back to routine. Back to inbox zero.
Back to being someone who definitely doesn’t eat an entire bag of Maoam's in one sitting.
This year, though, I’m experimenting with doing things a little differently.
I’m using September as a checkpoint.
Not a launchpad. Not a sprint.
Just a gentle nudge to review what’s actually working, and what I’ve been dragging behind me like a sad little suitcase with a broken wheel.
Here’s what I’m asking myself this month:
What routines still feel good, and what am I forcing?
What boundaries are working, and where am I leaking energy?
What have I already done this year that I’m proud of?
What do I need to let go of, for real?
What do I need more of right now? (Hint: it’s probably not more productivity hacks)
This season doesn’t need to be about the grind.
It can be about growing, but slower. Or not growing at all and just existing.
It can be about honouring the effort you’ve already made.
About choosing softness over speed.
About remembering that life isn’t a spreadsheet of KPIs - it’s a cycle, made up of seasons.
And maybe the most radical thing we can do right now…
Is not push.
Is not optimise.
Is not treat our bodies like robots whose only value is output.
Because you don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t need to hustle into September like you're on an episode of SAS: Who Dares Wins.
And you certainly don’t need to “make up for” a summer that wasn’t 100% productive.
You’re allowed to ease back in.
You’re allowed to reassess.
You’re allowed to stop performing busy and start choosing what actually feels good.
The point is, you get to choose.
So maybe let this be the season of intentional endings, soft restarts, and radical reflection.
Here's some journal prompts, if you’re in the mood to reflect:
💬 What have I achieved this year that I haven’t given myself credit for?
🍂 What am I ready to release? (habits, beliefs, bullshit expectations?)
🌱 What do I want to nurture in this final season of the year?
With lots of love and a big full body stretch,
